How can a Strava route be read without an account?
Every public route on Strava has an embed version (the one you get with "Embed on your website"). It contains the full track with altitudes and it is public by design. A small relay reads that page and hands the numbers to your browser. Private routes and routes shared with followers only stay unreadable, as they should.
Are my files uploaded somewhere?
No. A GPX, FIT or TCX file is parsed by your browser, on your device. The share link for a file carries a compressed copy of the profile inside the link itself, so no server keeps anything.
Why is the climbing lower than what Strava or my watch says?
Altitude is smoothed over 50 m before adding the ups, which removes the GPS jitter that inflates totals. The result usually sits 5 to 10 % below the figure shown by race organisers. Both are shown so you can compare.
How is the gradient of a section computed?
The track is resampled every 10 m, the local gradient is measured over 100 m, then the route is cut into climbs (over 1.5 %), descents (under -1.5 %) and flat parts. Bits shorter than 150 m are merged with their neighbours. For each section you get the average gradient and the steepest 100 m.
